Black Light Groove, Part Three: Muralicious

As promised, here are some more photos of my outrageous black light mandalas!

All of these are painted on the walls and ceiling of the master bedroom in my house, which is my studio and office too.

Front Page for Mandalas!

As I type this, the Etsy front page is displaying this gorgeous treasury of wonderful mandala art! That's my "Indian Trunk" mandala (painted on a vinyl record) in the top right corner. Yay!

Mandala Magnets have arrived!

Mandala Magnets are here!

I found a bunch of round magnets at SCRAP, a program here in Portland, Oregon that diverts tons of materials from being thrown into the landfill by reselling them to the public. Somehow or other they got ahold of these "I Support Green Power" magnets from Utah Power (which you can see in the last photo). I bought 'em up, because I love circles...

Circle, of course, is what the word "mandala" means in Sanskrit, and mandalas are my middle name!

So I printed stickers of my mandala designs and put them on the magnets to create cool new upcycled love!

The images are all digital photos of my original designs, which started out as paintings on recycled vinyl records.

The magnets are 2.5" in diameter (6.35 cm).

They would make a very groovy stocking stuffer! You can find them here for $2 each - Or click here to get 3 for $5!

I do think it's sad that Utah Power didn't have enough green power customers to get rid of all their magnets - but at least they are getting a new life now. And I'd like to add that the Eye Pop Art studio runs on green renewable power from Portland General Electric!

Mandalas from Buckman art camp

Last week, I taught a series of art classes for the Buckman Elementary "Celebrating Art" summer camp, a gig I got thanks to Jen at the DIY Lounge. The kids made clay pots and clay animals, explored printmaking, did a sgraffito project, and, of course, made beautiful mandalas!





The one below is just incredibly delightful to me, it's so different, imaginative, and childlike.
I will post photos of the other projects in another post - gotta run, it's my first day back at work at Trillium after a week of "vacation" (actually teaching a camp for three hours a day is a lot more tiring than 8 hours at my desk!).

In Record Time...

I recently wrapped up an awesome after school class for first-third graders. The kids designed their own mandalas and painted them onto primed vinyl records, then assembled them into fully functional clocks.
The class was loads of fun and the finished pieces turned out gorgeous. Please contact me if you are interested in having me do an arts residency at your school.

Mandalas get honorable mention

The last mandala on the second row is one of my Feng Shui Mirrors. Many thanks to inspira for including it in this gorgeous treasury of mandala images, which took an honorable mention in Etsy's poster contest. Yippee!

My life is a carnival of colors

The above mandala (painted on a 12" vinyl record) is called "CMYK." I made it almost ten years ago. At the time I was working at Kinko's and I was fascinated by the color copying and printing technology at my fingertips. I used every break and every opportunity for a training session to play with my paintings and see what could be done with them at Kinko's (a million things!). Inspired by the "CLC" (color laser copier), I made this painting using only cyan, magenta, yellow, and black - the four colors of toner that can be combined to reproduce every single color that can be printed - plus a little gold for an iridescent sparkle.

Needless to say, I am madly in love with color. This week's carnival theme for the Etsy Bloggers team is "Carnival of Colors," and I could go on forever. But I'll make it quick and just quote what National Geographic Traveler had to say when they reviewed my work last fall for their Oregon Shopping Guide:
