Portland Children's Museum Mandala Project

On Sunday, I had a great gig at the Portland Children's Museum. They hired me for their 59th anniversary Imagination Celebration, to do a collaborative mandala with kids on a 4' circular wood board.
I drew some concentric circles and the flower design in the very center, and the rest was designed and painted entirely by kids! They did an amazing job, especially considering that most of them were really young - much younger than the kids I usually work with. Pre-school, kindergarten, even some 2 year olds! There were a few older kids as well.
This mandala was probably worked on by about 18 different kids. At some point I had to give up on the idea of repetitive patterns and just let them go crazy, drawing all kinds of funny pictures around the outer edge of the circle.
It really turned out great, don't you think?
I believe the piece will be permanently installed at the Children's Museum, so if you are ever there be sure to check it out!
